Aging of the face is inevitable, over time the skin begins to loosen on the face and neck and crow’s feet appear at the corners of the eyes. Fine forehead lines become creases and then, gradually, deeper folds. The jawline softens into jowls, and beneath the chin, another chin or vertical folds appears at the front of the neck. Heredity, personal habits, the pull of gravity, and sun exposure contribute to the aging process.
As the aging population grows, it is obvious why a Facelift has become the third most desired facial plastic surgical procedure. At the Beverly Hills Aesthetic Surgical Institute, we strive to provide our Beverly Hills Facelift patients with some of the best facelift results in town by enhancing their natural beauty and providing a rejuvenated appearance.
A Facelift, also called a rhytidectomy, is a plastic surgery procedure that helps reduce and improve the visible signs of facial aging. The more common age-related skin problems that a Facelift can treat are sagging facial skin, fold lines that appear between the nose and mouth, jowls, and loose skin with excessive fat around the neck (often referred to as a “turkey neck” or double chin).
The facelift procedure is a very popular, long-lasting treatment that can be performed using various techniques to help patients regain confidence and appear more youthful. At the Beverly Hills Aesthetic Surgical Institute, Dr. David Saadat has performed hundreds of facial plastic surgery procedures over the years. In addition to a traditional Facelift, we offer our Beverly Hills patients techniques that treat the whole face or can target specific problem areas.
Dr. Sadaat offers several different facelift procedures that can treat the signs of aging and provide you with significant rejuvenation.
At the Beverly Hills Aesthetic Surgical Institute, we have seen our Facelift Beverly Hills patients enjoy the following benefits from their surgery:
As with any surgery, the best candidates should be nonsmokers, be overall healthy, and maintain a positive outlook with realistic expectations regarding the procedure. Other characteristics that make a good candidate for Facelift are:
The first step in getting Facelift surgery in Beverly Hills is to contact the Beverly Hills Aesthetic Surgical Institute and schedule your appointment. When you come in for your initial consultation, you will get to meet with Dr. Saadat and explain the goals you have from the procedure. He will examine your facial structure and ask questions regarding your medical history, during which time it is very important to be open and honest with him to avoid any unnecessary risks or side effects during the surgery and recovery. The two of you will be able to discuss your options and decide on which techniques may be the best to achieve your desired results. Once he has collected all of this information, Dr. Saadat will be able to create your surgical plan.
If you agree with the plan, our Patient Coordinator will be able to help you select the best date and time for you. You will also receive a list of instructions to follow before your surgery to ensure you have the best and safest results.
Dr. Saadat begins the incision in the area of the temple hair, just above and in front of the ear. Next, it continues under the earlobe and follows the back of the ear, and blends into the hairline. The skin is gently lifted as the surgeon repositions and tightens the underlying tissues and muscle. Some fat may be removed, as well as excess skin. For men, the incision is aligned to accommodate the natural beard lines. In all cases, the incisions are placed where they will fall in a natural crease of the skin to appear camouflaged.
After trimming the excess skin, the surgeon closes the incisions with fine sutures and/or metal clips. This will permit precise surgery and avoid shaving hair in the incision sites. Depending on the extent of the surgery, the process can take from two to four hours. When the procedure is performed with a combination of mild sedatives, local anesthesia, and mild intravenous anesthesia (“twilight sleep”), the patient will experience little discomfort. Some surgeons will prefer general anesthesia for their facelifts.
Following the surgery, the surgeon will apply a dressing to protect the entire area where the incisions have been made. The actual placement of incisions varies from patient to patient and is dependent on the surgeon’s judgment of that patient.
You will be able to return home after your Facelift, however, you should arrange for a family member or friend to provide a ride for you. You should also consider having a capable adult be able to assist you for the first few days to make your recovery a little easier. Dr. Saadat will prescribe you temporary oral pain medication so that any pain you feel will be alleviated, as well as some instructions to follow that will help you get the most out of the results of your surgery, such as keeping your head elevated.
After a few days of recovery, you will be asked to return for a follow-up with Dr. Saadat so he can remove any bandages and sutures, and evaluate your healing process. He will reapply fresh bandages before sending you home. You can expect to be bruised and swollen during the first week or so, but the medications prescribed should help minimize any infection and lessen the bruised or swollen appearance.
After about the first week post-surgery, you can return to light housework, but you should still take it rather easy to promote proper healing. By the end of the second week, most patients feel comfortable enough to return to work and light exercise like walking, but again, you shouldn’t exert yourself during the initial stages of recovery. Towards the end of the first month of recovery, you may still have some residual swelling and tightness, but you should begin to look and feel much better. It’s also around this time that many patients feel well enough to return to a light workout routine and slowly develop from there. You can also expect some pinkish hues around the incision sites, but they will fade over time.
Before electing to get surgery, you should understand the basics of the procedure. While the following are only estimates, they will help give patients a good idea of what they can expect.
The “deep plane” is the anatomic plane that lies between the SMAS-platysma complex and the deeper layers of muscle that are responsible for facial expression. For this particular facelift procedure, Dr. Saadat will release the four ligaments which are tethered to the deep plane which creates the natural lifting through the face and neck, allowing for tension-free movement.
These four released ligaments are the zygomatic ligaments (tethered to your cheeks), the masseteric and mandibular ligaments (tethered to the jowls), and the cervical retaining ligaments (anchors the platysma and soft tissues of the neck). By releasing each of these ligaments, your cheeks will regain shape and volume, your jawline will be smoother and more defined, and your neckline will have improved definition along the angle of your jaw.
Many of our Beverly Hills Deep Plane Facelift patients have seen results last between 10 – 15 years.
The Mini Facelift (sometimes referred to as a “short scar” or “limited incision” facelift) is a less-invasive surgical procedure that focuses on skin tightening, minimizing the appearance of the jowls, and small corrections for preventative measures. This procedure is ideal for younger patients who are not candidates for a comprehensive facelift but seeking balanced facial features.
Since the mini-lift doesn’t always require tightening of the underlying muscle (SMAS layer), it usually won’t have a dramatic effect on moderate to severe sagging skin and jowling, but is a great procedure for those with mild sagging or jowling and isn’t getting the same results from Dermal Fillers or other skin tightening treatments that they used to.
On average, a mini-lift can last between five and ten years before another lift is needed.
A simple way to tell if you might benefit from a brow lift is by gently lifting the skin above your eyebrow—if this results in a pleasing, ‘refreshed’ appearance and eliminates most of the excess skin in the upper eyelid area, a brow lift may be an ideal choice to fulfill your cosmetic goals and allow your outer appearance to reflect your inner vitality, by giving you an alert, well-rested, and approachable appearance.
